Short answer: a tank is safe for drinking water when its interior is food-grade, its lid seals out light and dust, and it is cleaned twice a year. If your tank shows algae, odour, or surface degradation, your water quality is already suffering.

What food-grade actually means
Food-grade materials are certified non-reactive with water and food. They do not release plasticisers, heavy metals, or taste into what they hold. The two materials you should insist on are AISI 304 stainless steel and 100% virgin food-grade polyethylene. Everything else is a compromise.
Five signs your tank is not safe
- Green or black film on the walls: algae is established, not just visible.
- Odour from taps: biofilm has formed inside the tank or pipes.
- Chalky, faded, or cracked exterior: UV breakdown is underway, and the interior is next.
- Sediment that returns quickly after cleaning: the lid is not sealing.
- Unknown or unstamped material: if you cannot verify it is food-grade, assume it is not.
